Science, Technology and Innovation WITH  LULA!

We, scientists, professors, researchers, technicians, entrepreneurs, workers, public staff, graduate students, and managers who work in Science, Technology, and Innovation (ST&I), declare ourselves for the election of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to the Presidency of the Federative Republic of Brazil. We do this because we are confident that Lula will lead a democratic government with social advances and promote the country’s economic recovery. We are also sure that any continuity of President Bolsonaro’s bad government must worsen and expand his already-disastrous impact upon Brazil’s economy, society, opportunities and reputation.
Over the four years of his government, Bolsonaro stood out for his denialism concerning science. He acts against vaccines. He discouraged personal protection. He endorsed ineffective medicines. His actions exacerbated the problem of handling the pandemic which caused hundreds of thousands of deaths. Bolsonaro promoted a process of extinguishing ST&I in Brazil: he drastically reduced resources for ST&I, and for education, by diverting their legally-allocated funds over to electoral interests and “secret” budgets. We can count the impact as we watch the exodus of young talent to other countries in search of better study and work conditions. His government acted against the freedom of research. He undoes the transparency of public management by promoting dismissals and through the persecution of those researchers who share essential data about the environment, health, and the country’s economy.
His deliberate policy of destroying the environment has considerably increased deforestation, threatens indigenous lands and has driven the country into a dismal international reputation. His government’s actions mean that Brazil’s image abroad remains profoundly affected. This harms international trade and cooperation, and further harms Brazil ST&I. His tragic legacy is well-known in our daily lives: the constant threats to democracy and individual rights, the massive increase in unemployment, the increase in hunger (which now affects 33 million people), and the profound deterioration in the living conditions of the Brazilian population are that tragic legacy of a government policy which the country must now defeat, democratically.
As President of the Republic, Lula always acted democratically and will do so again. The population recognized the excellent performance of his government: at the end of his term, Lula had 87% approval. Under Lula Brazil reached the rank of sixth economy in the world (today under Bolsonaro, it has fallen to 12th place). Under Lula, our GDP per person was the highest in our history. With Lula, our foreign debt had been totally repaid. Then our country was able to accumulate hundreds of billions of dollars in reserves. There was full employment, and Brazil was removed from the Hunger Map. Under Lula, Science, Technology, and Inovation (ST&I) had a significant boost, as well as education, with a substantial increase in resources and adequate planning. We were reaching much higher levels than is possible now under the chaotic policies of Bolsonaro. Under Lula, there was the creation and expansion of many universities and federal institutes; the access of millions of young people to employment, to schools and to universities was expanded. Social inclusion actions benefited millions of people. Then we felt pride, now we feel exasperation.
Lula’s proposals for the next government are clear; his aim is to recover and greatly expand what his previous government accomplished. Essential points will be the economic recovery of the country, the improvement of the educational system and public health, the extinction of hunger, and concern for the environment and sustainable agriculture. In his program, Lula plans to increase and continue resources for ST&I and education – seen not as expenses but as investments – and to encourage fundamental research and technological and social innovation. Emphasis will be given to the appreciation of scholarships and the creation of job opportunities for young people who want to dedicate themselves to ST&I in the country, offering a future for them and for the Nation.
For these reasons, we support Lula’s election to the Presidency of Brazil. Voting for him also means joining a broad alliance of democrats to save our country from authoritarianism. As professionals in ST&I, a crucial sector for Brazil’s insertion into the contemporary world, we declare our firm willingness to collaborate for economic recovery and sustainable and socially fairer development. For a more prosperous Brazil, for a more equal Brazil, for a Brazil in which education, science, and health are seen as essential instruments for the country’s economic development and the improvement of the living conditions of all Brazilians, we vote for Lula!
